Matthew macfadyen why leave mi 5

When they killed off Helen Lisa Faulkner in the first season the writers made their point about the expendability of characters a little too well - no one is going to emotionally invest themselves in people who are likely to be deep-fried or exiled to Chile at any minute. Notably, throughout the many changes in line-up, they have managed to keep the core team to a strict stereotype: white male leader with a white female and a male member of an ethic minority as sidekicks.

However, despite the apparent attempt to keep at least the shape of the team stable, the huge differences between the quirkily flawed Danny "money problems" Hunter and his replacement, the somewhat boring Zaffar Younis Raza Jaffrey , make many a fan long for the old days.

This week's episode has a lot of the things that make Spooks both good and bad. The good is that it involves a politically relevant plot: Harry decides to put a stop to the CIA's recent habit of kidnapping British citizens, putting them in orange jumpsuits and sending them off to Guantanamo Bay.

Unfortunately, this results in a terrorist being let loose to go on a murders spree. Harry is suspended pending a disciplinary hearing for overriding a decision made by the White House.

The bad news is that the episode revolves around Harry's restlessness while on suspension and subjects us to far too much of the irritating Jo Miranda Raison.

Trading Fiona, the experienced ex-MI6 officer with an interesting past, for Jo, who went through the shortest training course in history and seems prone to fits of ineptitude, panic and negativity, was probably one of the worst moves the team behind Spooks has made. However, in this case the downside may have an upside: the high turnover of the team does give one hope that some day soon Jo may suffer a tragic accident and be replaced with someone exciting and new.

Spooks is still a great show. It's just not as good as it was. The original brilliance is what has made the program's slow decline so disappointing. Why personnel changes hurt Spooks. Richard joined Spooks as the new chief in series 7 before leaving two years later. Already a familiar face on British TV, since Spooks he has had even bigger successes, most notably playing dwarf prince Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy.

Keeley Hawes Zoe Reynolds. Keeley played junior officer Zoe before having to leave for Chile in series 3 to avoid jail time another lovely end , and she has since become a TV queen.

David Oyelowo Danny Hunter. David played yet another junior officer who died sacrificing himself at the end of series 3. Since then, he has become a genuine Hollywood player thanks to his critically acclaimed performance of Martin Luther King Jr in Selma , earning a Golden Globe nomination.

They're pretty competitive and quite often it's not hidden, in a way that actors would never let show. You never let your feelings surface as an actor unless you really hate someone. Like so many ITV two-part dramas, it's a love triangle where you spend most of your time playing spot the serial killer. They've just got funny bones.

I've worked with Richard twice before. In Wives and Daughters he came f on for one day and asked me to marry him, and I shoo-ed him off. What did she say? Hawes doesn't come from a theatrical background herself. She is the youngest of four daughters born to a London cabbie. The family lived in Marylebone and every day she walked past the Sylvia Young stage school. She badgered her mum for lessons and eventually got in on a free grant. She stayed for 10 years and school mates included Emma Bunton "I lived with her for six months. We used to go on caravan holidays" , the Appleton sisters and Denise van Outen.

Hawes left home at 17 and worked in a casino. Then she was spotted by a modelling scout on Oxford Street and signed up by Select. But this was during the Kate Moss grunge period and Hawes openly admits she couldn't stay skinny enough. Eventually, she ended up doing work experience on magazines with the vague aim of applying to Rada.

Hawes can remember the exact moment her life changed.
