Heart And Soul, released in December , contains nearly every track the band recorded; remastered over 4 CDs. The first two discs contain their entire studio output, including the albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer, along with all singles and compilation appearances. Disc 3 collects demos and radio recordings, many of which were previously unreleased.
A compilation album of songs recorded live at the Electric Circus, Manchester, on October and released in June ; marking the last nights of the venue before it closed. Joy Division performed under their original name Warsaw on the 2nd night, but the track, At a Later Date, was credited to Joy Division on the sleeve as they had changed their name in January Atmosphere was originally released in March as a limited edition copies France-only single under the title Licht Und Blindheit German for "Light and Blindness".
Released as a 7" flexi disc and given away free in selected record shops in June Tracks were recorded during the sessions for Closer, Britannia Row Studios, Islington, London, March , ; but were unused on the album and were exclusive to this flexi.
As You Said is untitled on the flexi. The Joy Division tracks are from rehearsal sessions, and In A Lonely Place appears for the first time in this full-length version. The first release to feature songs from both bands in one album. Most of it was subsequently re-recorded, save for The Drawback, and you can see why: its stop-start punkiness feels lightweight and indebted to Buzzcocks.
Perhaps they abandoned it on account of the lyrics: a depiction of goose-stepping soldiers ambiguous enough to cause trouble. Essentially improvised synthesizer over a rhythm track, it is interesting rather than essential. You can see how Incubation worked as a powerful set-opening instrumental onstage, its role during Joy Division gigs in , but the studio version reveals it as basically a Transmission redux — similar bassline and guitar — albeit with stompier, glam-inspired drums.
Proof that Joy Division never entirely left their roots behind: at the same session that produced the peerless Atmosphere, they recorded Ice Age, which would have sounded like a straightforward punky thrash were it not for the bizarre drum track, which lends an unsettling off-kilter feel. It is tough going — the lyrics are utterly hopeless; the voice singing them sounds authentically desperate — but as a portrait of a mind at the end of its tether, it is horribly compelling.
They eventually reworked it into Interzone, but there is a distinct northern backbeat to Novelty, too. He saw them play live in April , and promised to put them on Granada TV, which he did later that year.
He also offered an escape route to them from record company RCA, who wanted to meddle with their sound. Factory would meddle, too, it must be noted, but the results were wondrous. The two songs that appear on A Factory Sample in December , alongside tracks by Cabaret Voltaire and the Durutti Column, show the rapidity of their progression.
The edition of his lyrics and notebooks, So This Is Permanence , shows an artist distilling his writing into phrases that plummet into the inner depths at the same time as they explode outwards towards universal experience. Darkness seems to permeate every groove. There are no places to settle, no comfort zones, anywhere on Unknown Pleasures. Hannett clearly becomes the fifth member of the group.
Even when the term was used by former Stooge Ron Asheton, it was inextricably linked with right wing rhetoric - the guitarist was obsessed with Nazi memorabilia and could be spotted wearing an SS officer's uniform at shows.
We just thought it summed up our new start perfectly. Despite an immediate controversy over the decision in the music press, the name New Order has stuck with the band for nearly 40 years, across the albums Movement , Power Corruption And Lies and Technique and the huge hits Blue Monday , True Faith and Regret. While New Order refused to play any Joy Division material in their early years apart from on a couple of special occasions , the 21st Century saw the group embrace their past, and they frequently perform the old JD songs Love Will Tear Us Apart and Transmission among others in their sets.
